Some users notice this right after installing an iOS update. The iPhone connects normally when a Wi-Fi network is selected manually, but later it stops joining the same trusted network automatically. You arrive at home or work expecting instant connection, yet the phone stays on cellular data until you open Wi-Fi settings yourself.
This behavior usually isn’t a hardware problem. Updates sometimes reset background network priorities, modify privacy settings, or corrupt saved network profiles. The phone still remembers the network name, but the automatic join process fails quietly in the background.
Confirm the Symptom First
Before changing settings, make sure the issue matches this pattern:
- The network was previously trusted and connected automatically.
- Manual connection works without password errors.
- The problem started immediately after an iOS update.
If manual connection fails too, the issue may be router-related instead.
Check Auto-Join Settings
Updates occasionally disable Auto-Join without obvious warning.
- Open Settings → Wi-Fi.
- Tap the information icon next to the network name.
- Make sure Auto-Join is turned on.
Toggle it off, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on. This refreshes the connection rule stored by iOS.
Forget and Re-Add the Network
If the saved profile became corrupted during the update, recreating it usually restores automatic behavior.
- Go to Settings → Wi-Fi.
- Tap the network’s info icon.
- Select Forget This Network.
- Restart the iPhone.
- Reconnect by entering the password again.
After reconnecting, lock the phone and move briefly out of range, then return to confirm it reconnects automatically.
Disable Low Data Mode for That Network
In some updates, Low Data Mode interferes with background reconnection attempts.
- Open the network details page again.
- Turn Low Data Mode off.
This allows the system to reconnect without waiting for user activity.
Reset Network Settings
If multiple saved networks behave the same way, system network preferences may need rebuilding.
- Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Select Reset → Reset Network Settings.
This removes Wi-Fi passwords, VPN settings, and paired networks, so they must be added again afterward.
Alternative Check: Wi-Fi Assist and Location Services
Rarely, location-based networking stops working after updates.
- Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services.
- Scroll to System Services.
- Ensure Networking & Wireless is enabled.
This helps iOS recognize familiar locations where automatic joining should occur.
Once the network profile is rebuilt or settings refreshed, the iPhone typically resumes reconnecting on its own the next time you return within range.
