You open Wi-Fi settings expecting to see several available networks, but the list appears empty or shows only one network while other devices nearby connect normally. A few minutes later, the networks suddenly appear again without any clear reason. This behavior often repeats randomly — sometimes after unlocking the phone, moving between rooms, or waking the device from sleep.
When Wi-Fi scanning works inconsistently like this, the problem is usually not the router. In most cases, the Android device temporarily stops scanning properly due to power management rules, corrupted network settings, software glitches, or interference affecting the Wi-Fi radio.
Confirm the Symptom First
Before changing settings, verify that nearby networks actually exist. Check another phone or laptop in the same location. If other devices detect networks consistently while yours does not, the issue is local to the Android device.
Toggle Wi-Fi and Reset the Radio
The wireless radio occasionally gets stuck in a low-power state.
- Turn Wi-Fi off.
- Enable Airplane Mode for about 30 seconds.
- Disable Airplane Mode.
- Turn Wi-Fi back on and wait one minute.
This forces the system to reload wireless drivers and often restores scanning immediately.
Disable Battery Optimization for Wi-Fi Services
Many intermittent detection problems appear after aggressive battery saving features restrict background scanning.
- Open Settings → Apps → Special app access → Battery optimization.
- Show system apps.
- Locate Wi-Fi, Android System, or Connectivity Services.
- Set them to Not optimized.
After changing this, lock and unlock the device once and check the network list again.
Reset Network Settings
Corrupted saved networks or configuration conflicts can interrupt scanning cycles.
- Go to Settings → System → Reset options.
- Select Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth.
- Confirm the reset.
This removes saved connections but often resolves unstable detection behavior.
Check Location Scanning Permission
Android uses location services to improve Wi-Fi discovery. If disabled, networks may appear inconsistently.
- Open Settings → Location.
- Ensure Location is turned on.
- Open Location services → Scanning.
- Enable Wi-Fi scanning.
Update System Software
Driver bugs affecting Wi-Fi scanning are commonly fixed through system updates.
- Go to Settings → System → Software update.
- Install any available update.
- Restart the device after installation.
Check for Hardware or Interference Issues
If the issue only happens in certain areas, interference may be involved. Microwave ovens, Bluetooth congestion, or crowded 2.4 GHz channels can temporarily hide networks from weaker antennas. Moving closer to the router or switching the router to a different channel can help confirm this.
Optional Alternative: Safe Mode Test
Booting into Safe Mode temporarily disables third-party apps. If Wi-Fi networks appear normally there, a recently installed app is interfering with connectivity services.
Restart the phone, hold the power menu, then long-press Restart until Safe Mode appears. Test Wi-Fi scanning before exiting.
Once Wi-Fi networks begin appearing consistently again, normal operation should return without further adjustment.
