A common situation: notifications arrive normally while connected to WiFi, but the moment you leave home or switch to mobile data, alerts stop appearing. Messages show up only after opening the app manually, or several notifications arrive all at once much later.
This usually isn’t a signal problem. In most cases, Android temporarily restricts background connections when the network changes. The system may treat mobile data as a limited connection and pause background syncing, especially if battery optimization or data-saving features are active.
Why This Happens
When Android switches networks, apps must reconnect to notification servers. If background activity is restricted — by Data Saver, battery optimization, or adaptive connectivity settings — that reconnect process can fail silently. The app stays online only when opened manually, which is why notifications seem to “disappear.”
Step-by-Step Fixes
Allow Background Data for Affected Apps
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps → select the app missing notifications.
- Tap Mobile data & WiFi (or Data usage).
- Enable Background data and Unrestricted data usage.
This allows the app to reconnect immediately after switching networks.
Disable Data Saver Temporarily
- Open Settings.
- Go to Network & Internet.
- Select Data Saver.
- Turn it off, or allow unrestricted access for messaging and email apps.
Data Saver is one of the most common causes because it quietly blocks background syncing on mobile data.
Remove Battery Optimization Restrictions
- Open Settings → Battery.
- Tap Battery usage or Background limits.
- Select the affected app.
- Set it to Unrestricted or Don’t optimize.
Aggressive battery management can stop apps from reconnecting after a network change.
Reset Network Connections
If notifications fail across multiple apps, resetting network settings often clears stuck connectivity rules.
- Open Settings.
- Go to System → Reset options.
- Tap Reset WiFi, mobile & Bluetooth.
You’ll need to reconnect to WiFi afterward, but this refreshes how Android handles network transitions.
Optional Alternative
Some devices include adaptive connectivity or smart network switching features. Turning these off can stabilize notification delivery:
- Open Settings → Network & Internet.
- Look for Adaptive Connectivity, Smart Network Switch, or similar.
- Disable it and test notifications again.
Once background data access and battery restrictions are adjusted, notifications should resume normally when switching between WiFi and mobile data.
