Android phone keeps dropping mobile data when screen turns off

A common complaint sounds like this: mobile data works perfectly while the phone is in your hand, but the moment the screen turns off, apps stop syncing. Messages arrive late, music streaming pauses, downloads fail, or background apps suddenly reconnect when you unlock the device.

This usually isn’t a network problem. In most cases, Android is intentionally limiting data activity to save battery power while the device is idle.

Why It Happens

Modern Android versions aggressively manage background activity. When the screen turns off, the system may activate battery optimization, data restrictions, or sleep policies that temporarily cut mobile data access for apps.

Manufacturers like Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and others often add their own power-saving systems on top of Android, making the behavior even more aggressive.

The result: mobile data appears to disconnect, even though signal strength is fine.

Fix Battery Optimization Restrictions

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Apps or Apps & Notifications.
  3. Select the app affected (messaging, streaming, email, etc.).
  4. Tap Battery.
  5. Choose Unrestricted or Don’t optimize.

This allows the app to maintain background data when the screen is off.

Disable Data Saver Mode

Data Saver can silently block background mobile data.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Network & InternetData Saver.
  3. Turn it off, or allow unrestricted data for important apps.

Check Background Data Permissions

  1. Go to SettingsApps.
  2. Select the affected app.
  3. Tap Mobile Data & Wi-Fi (or Data Usage).
  4. Enable Background data.
  5. Enable Allow data usage while Data Saver is on if available.

Turn Off Aggressive Power Saving

Some phones automatically suspend network activity during standby.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Battery.
  3. Disable Power Saving Mode or Ultra Battery Saver.
  4. Look for options like Sleep apps, Deep sleeping apps, or Background limits and remove affected apps.

Keep Mobile Data Active During Sleep (If Available)

On certain devices:

  1. Open SettingsDeveloper Options.
  2. Enable Mobile data always active.

If Developer Options are hidden, tap Build Number seven times inside About Phone to enable them.

Reset Network Settings

If the issue started after a system update or carrier change, resetting network configurations can help.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to SystemReset options.
  3. Select Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth.

You’ll need to reconnect to Wi-Fi afterward.

Alternative Fix: Check Manufacturer Background Controls

Brands often hide extra controls under names like App Management, Auto Launch, or Background Activity Manager. Allow the affected apps to run in the background and disable automatic restriction features.

Once battery optimization and background limits are removed, mobile data should remain stable even when the screen turns off.
