Gmail attachments fail downloading when device switches between networks

A common situation goes like this: an attachment begins downloading normally in Gmail, then suddenly stops or fails with no clear error. This often happens while moving between Wi-Fi and mobile data — for example, leaving home, entering a vehicle, or walking into an area with weak signal coverage. The email itself loads, but attachments either freeze, restart repeatedly, or refuse to open.

The issue usually is not the attachment or Gmail itself. It happens because the device changes network routes mid-download. When the connection switches, Gmail’s secure download session loses continuity. The app or browser still thinks the original connection exists, while the operating system has already reassigned a new IP path. The result is a broken transfer that Gmail cannot resume properly.

Confirm the Problem Pattern

Before changing settings, notice when failures occur. Attachments typically download without issue while staying on a single network. Failures appear only when:

  • The phone switches automatically between Wi-Fi and cellular data
  • Signal strength drops briefly during download
  • VPN or network optimization features reconnect in the background

If downloads succeed after retrying on a stable connection, the cause is almost always network handoff interruption.

Pause Network Switching Temporarily

The simplest fix is preventing the device from changing networks while downloading.

  1. Turn off Wi-Fi Assist, Adaptive Connectivity, or Smart Network Switch (name varies by device).
  2. Choose either Wi-Fi or mobile data manually.
  3. Reconnect Gmail and download the attachment again.

Keeping one consistent connection allows Gmail to complete the encrypted transfer session without restarting.

Restart the Download Session Properly

If a download already failed, retrying immediately often repeats the error because Gmail caches the interrupted session.

  1. Close the Gmail app completely (remove it from recent apps).
  2. Toggle Airplane Mode on for about 15 seconds.
  3. Disable Airplane Mode and reconnect to a single network.
  4. Open Gmail and download again.

This forces the device to create a fresh network handshake.

Disable VPN or Private DNS Temporarily

VPN services and Private DNS settings frequently reconnect when networks change. That reconnection breaks attachment downloads even if internet access appears normal.

  1. Turn off VPN or secure DNS temporarily.
  2. Retry downloading the attachment.

If downloads work afterward, the VPN may need split-tunneling or auto-reconnect adjustments.

Clear Gmail App Cache

Repeated interrupted downloads can leave corrupted temporary files.

  1. Open device Settings.
  2. Go to Apps → Gmail → Storage.
  3. Select Clear Cache (not Clear Data).
  4. Reopen Gmail and retry.

This removes incomplete download fragments without affecting email accounts.

Alternative Workaround

If switching networks is unavoidable, open the email through a web browser instead of the Gmail app and download the attachment there. Browsers tend to handle connection changes more gracefully and can restart transfers automatically.

Once downloads are performed on a stable connection — or automatic network switching is limited — Gmail attachments should complete normally without further interruption.
