Gmail notifications suddenly stopped arriving after recent Android system update

Everything worked normally before the update. Emails arrived instantly, notifications appeared on the lock screen, and Gmail behaved predictably. Then after installing a recent Android system update, notifications quietly stopped. New messages only appear when opening the app manually, or sometimes hours later.

This situation is surprisingly common after major Android updates. The update itself usually doesn’t break Gmail, but it often resets background activity rules, battery optimization settings, or notification permissions without making it obvious.

Why This Happens

Modern Android versions aggressively manage background apps to save battery life. During a system update, Gmail may be moved into a restricted power state, sync permissions can partially reset, or notification channels may be silently altered.

As a result, Gmail still receives emails — but Android delays or blocks the notification process.

Step-by-Step Fixes

Check Gmail Notification Settings First

  1. Open Gmail.
  2. Tap the menu icon → Settings.
  3. Select your email account.
  4. Tap Notifications.
  5. Choose All instead of High priority only or None.

Updates sometimes revert this setting without warning.

Confirm Android Notification Permission

  1. Open SettingsAppsGmail.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Make sure notifications are enabled.
  4. Open notification categories and confirm none are muted.

After updates, certain notification channels may remain enabled visually but stop triggering alerts.

Disable Battery Optimization for Gmail

  1. Go to SettingsAppsGmail.
  2. Tap Battery.
  3. Select Unrestricted or Allow background activity.

This is the most frequent cause. Android may prevent Gmail from maintaining its background connection.

Verify Account Sync Is Active

  1. Open SettingsAccounts.
  2. Select your Google account.
  3. Tap Account sync.
  4. Ensure Gmail sync is turned on.

If sync was paused during the update process, notifications will never trigger.

Clear Gmail App Cache

  1. Go to SettingsAppsGmail.
  2. Tap Storage.
  3. Select Clear cache.

This removes outdated background data created before the system update.

Optional Alternative Fix

If notifications still fail, remove and re-add the Google account:

  1. Open SettingsAccounts.
  2. Remove the affected Google account.
  3. Restart the phone.
  4. Add the account again.

This forces Android to rebuild the sync and notification framework from scratch. In most cases, notifications begin arriving normally within a few minutes once synchronization resumes.

After these adjustments, Gmail should return to real-time notifications without further changes.
