Some users notice the problem immediately after updating the Google Drive app. Files that opened normally before suddenly refuse to load. Tapping a document may show a blank screen, a continuous loading spinner, or an error saying the file can’t be previewed. In many cases, the app itself still launches normally — only file access is affected.
This behavior usually appears after a major app update changes how Drive handles cached data, permissions, or background syncing. Older cached files and newly updated app components don’t always cooperate right away. The result is an app that looks functional but fails when trying to open content.
Confirm the issue is limited to the app
Before changing anything, open Google Drive from a web browser and try accessing the same file. If the file opens normally there, your data is safe and the problem is local to the mobile app.
Force close the app and restart it
After updates, some services continue running with older memory states.
- Open the recent apps screen.
- Swipe Google Drive away to fully close it.
- Wait a few seconds.
- Open the app again and try the file.
This simple restart often reconnects the updated app to background services correctly.
Clear cached data
Corrupted cache is the most common reason files stop opening after updates.
On Android:
- Go to Settings → Apps → Google Drive.
- Select Storage.
- Tap Clear Cache (not Clear Data).
Reopen Drive and allow it a minute to rebuild temporary files before testing again.
Check account sync status
If syncing pauses during an update, Drive may fail to retrieve file permissions.
- Open Drive.
- Tap the menu icon.
- Check whether syncing is paused or showing an error.
- Reconnect Wi-Fi or mobile data if needed.
Once sync resumes, files typically open normally again.
Update Google Play services or system components
Drive relies heavily on Google Play services. An app update without a matching services update can cause file previews to fail.
- Open the Play Store.
- Search for Google Play services.
- Install any available update.
- Restart the device.
Sign out and sign back in
If permission tokens became invalid during the update, reauthentication refreshes them.
- Go to device Settings → Accounts.
- Remove the Google account.
- Restart the phone.
- Add the account again.
Allow Drive to resync before opening files.
Optional alternative: reinstall the app
If files still won’t open, uninstalling and reinstalling Google Drive removes leftover update conflicts entirely.
- Uninstall Google Drive.
- Restart the device.
- Install it again from the Play Store.
After reinstalling, files should open normally once syncing completes.
