A common situation looks like this: Instagram works normally on Wi-Fi and mobile data, photos load fine, messages send without delay, but the moment you try uploading a Story while connected through a mobile hotspot, the upload either freezes, fails midway, or shows “Couldn't Upload. Try Again.”
Most people assume Instagram is down or the phone has a performance issue. In reality, this behavior usually points to how hotspot connections handle data routing rather than a problem with the app itself.
Why This Happens
When a device connects through a mobile hotspot, traffic passes through an additional network layer. Some carriers apply bandwidth shaping, NAT restrictions, or upload prioritization rules to hotspot traffic. Instagram Stories rely on continuous background upload sessions, and even small interruptions or packet filtering can cause the upload process to fail.
Unlike regular browsing, Story uploads are sensitive to unstable upstream speed and connection handoffs. A hotspot connection may look strong but still drop short upload bursts that Instagram depends on.
Step-by-Step Fixes
Check Hotspot Data Restrictions
On the phone providing the hotspot, open mobile network settings and verify that hotspot data limits or data saver modes are disabled. Some devices silently throttle upload traffic once hotspot usage begins.
Disable Data Saver on the Uploading Device
Turn off Data Saver or Low Data Mode on the device connected to the hotspot. Instagram may pause background upload packets when data-saving features are active.
Switch Hotspot Band (2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz)
If your phone allows it, change the hotspot frequency band. The 5 GHz band is faster but less stable at distance. Switching to 2.4 GHz often improves upload consistency.
Reset Network Session
Turn hotspot off for about 30 seconds, enable airplane mode on both devices briefly, then reconnect. This forces a new carrier routing session, which often resolves upload failures.
Disable VPN or Private DNS
