You might notice this while moving between areas — a video pauses, pages stop loading, or apps suddenly show no connection for a few seconds. The signal bars remain visible, but data briefly disappears right when the phone changes from 5G to LTE or switches back again. It often happens during travel, inside buildings, or in locations where coverage overlaps.
This behavior usually isn’t a hardware failure. It happens because the phone is constantly renegotiating its connection with nearby towers. When signal strength between 5G and LTE is similar, the device may switch networks repeatedly. Each transition forces the modem to re-authenticate and rebuild the data session, which creates a short interruption.
Check if Network Switching Is the Trigger
Open the status bar and watch the network indicator while using data. If the connection drops exactly when the icon changes between 5G and LTE, the issue is almost always related to unstable coverage rather than apps or Wi-Fi settings.
Lock the Phone to a Single Network Mode
This is the most effective fix in areas with inconsistent 5G coverage.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Mobile Network or Connections.
- Select Network Mode.
- Choose LTE Only or 4G Preferred.
Using LTE alone often produces a more stable connection because the phone stops attempting constant handoffs between technologies.
Reset Network Settings
Carrier configuration glitches can make handovers fail more often than normal.
- Open Settings.
- Go to General Management or System.
- Select Reset.
- Tap Reset Network Settings.
This removes saved cellular configurations and forces the device to rebuild a clean connection profile.
Update Carrier Settings and System Software
Network switching logic is controlled partly by carrier profiles. Updates often improve how the phone handles tower transitions.
- Check Software Update in Settings.
- Install any pending updates.
- Restart the phone after installation.
Disable Smart Network Switching Features
Some devices include adaptive connectivity or intelligent network switching. These features try to optimize speed but can cause aggressive handoffs.
- Search Settings for Adaptive Connectivity, Smart Network Switch, or similar options.
- Turn the feature off.
- Restart the device.
Check SIM Card Condition
An aging or poorly seated SIM can delay authentication during network transitions.
- Power off the phone.
- Remove and reseat the SIM card.
- If the SIM is several years old, request a replacement from the carrier.
Alternative Solution if Coverage Is Weak
If drops only happen at home or work, enabling Wi-Fi Calling can bypass unstable cellular handoffs entirely. Calls and data route through Wi-Fi while cellular remains in standby, preventing interruptions during signal changes.
Once the phone stops rapidly switching between 5G and LTE — either by stabilizing the network mode or correcting carrier configuration — the connection typically remains steady without further adjustment.
