Some users notice their phone or tablet types normally at first, but the moment autocorrect suggestions appear above the keyboard, everything slows down. Letters start showing up half a second late, typing feels sticky, and fast typing becomes frustrating. The delay usually disappears if suggestions are disabled or when typing inside certain apps.
This behavior typically points to the suggestion engine working harder than it should. Autocorrect systems constantly analyze what you type, compare it against dictionaries, learn patterns, and sometimes connect to cloud prediction services. When something interrupts that process — high memory usage, corrupted keyboard data, or background syncing — the keyboard pauses briefly while generating suggestions.
Check if the keyboard cache is overloaded
Keyboard apps store learned words, typing history, and prediction data. Over time, this database can become heavy or slightly corrupted, causing delays when suggestions load.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps or Applications.
- Select your keyboard app (Gboard, Samsung Keyboard, SwiftKey, etc.).
- Tap Storage.
- Choose Clear Cache.
Do not clear data yet unless the problem continues, since that removes learned words.
Reduce prediction workload
Some keyboards enable multiple prediction features at once — next-word prediction, emoji suggestions, grammar correction, and multilingual detection. Running all of them together can introduce lag on mid-range or older devices.
- Open keyboard Settings.
- Locate Text correction or Smart typing.
- Disable features one at a time, starting with:
- Emoji suggestions
- Grammar suggestions
- Multilingual typing
Test typing after each change. Often one feature is responsible rather than all of them.
Check device memory pressure
If RAM usage is high, the system may briefly pause the keyboard while allocating resources for prediction processing.
- Close unused apps from recent apps.
- Restart the device.
- Avoid floating apps or screen overlays while typing.
A restart alone fixes many cases because it resets background services competing with the keyboard.
Update or reinstall the keyboard app
Typing delay tied specifically to suggestions sometimes appears after a buggy update.
- Open the app store.
- Check for keyboard updates.
- If already updated, uninstall updates or reinstall the keyboard.
Reinstalling rebuilds prediction databases and removes damaged configuration files.
Disable personalized learning temporarily
Cloud-based learning features sync typing habits across devices. Network delays during syncing can slow suggestion rendering.
- Open keyboard settings.
- Turn off Personalized suggestions or Improve typing with data.
- Test typing speed again.
Alternative solution
If the delay continues only in one specific app, the issue may come from that app’s text field rather than the keyboard. Testing another keyboard app briefly helps confirm this. If another keyboard works smoothly, keeping it or waiting for an app update is usually the simplest fix.
Once suggestions appear instantly again and typing feels responsive, no further adjustment is needed.
