Mobile data stops working when dual SIM is enabled

A fairly common situation: mobile data works normally with one SIM installed, but the moment a second SIM is activated, internet access suddenly becomes unstable or stops completely. Signal bars may still appear strong, calls and SMS continue working, yet apps refuse to load or pages time out.

This usually isn’t a network outage. In most cases, the phone is struggling to decide which SIM should handle mobile data, or system settings change automatically when dual SIM mode is enabled.

Why This Happens

Most dual SIM phones allow only one SIM to use mobile data at a time. When the second SIM becomes active, the device may switch the default data line, disable data on the original SIM, or apply carrier restrictions. Some networks also reset APN configurations when a new SIM is detected.

The result looks like a data failure even though the connection itself hasn’t actually disappeared.

Step-by-Step Fixes

Confirm the Default Data SIM

Open Settings → SIM cards / Mobile network. Look for the option labeled Mobile Data or Preferred SIM for data. Make sure the correct SIM is selected. After switching, wait about 20–30 seconds for the network to reconnect.

Toggle Mobile Data Off and On

After selecting the correct SIM, disable mobile data, wait a few seconds, then enable it again. This forces the phone to rebuild the data session using the proper SIM profile.

Check APN Settings

Go to Settings → Mobile Network → Access Point Names (APN). Verify that the APN matches your carrier’s official configuration. Dual SIM activation sometimes replaces or clears these settings.

If unsure, reset APN settings to default and restart the phone.

Disable Smart Data Switching

Some Android devices include features like Auto data switching or Smart network switch. When enabled, the phone may constantly attempt to move data between SIMs, causing drops.

Turn this feature off and test the connection again.

Restart After Both SIMs Are Active

Insert both SIM cards, confirm they are detected, then restart the device. A clean boot allows the modem to assign proper roles to each SIM from the start.

Optional Alternative Solution

If data still fails, temporarily disable the secondary SIM and test mobile data again. If it immediately works, the issue may be related to carrier compatibility or network band conflicts between the two SIM cards. In that case, keeping one SIM limited to calls and SMS only often stabilizes the connection.

Once the correct data SIM is locked in and network settings are refreshed, mobile data typically resumes normal operation.
