Some users notice the problem immediately after turning on fingerprint or face recognition inside the PayPal app. The app opens normally, biometric authentication appears, access seems successful — and then the login screen loads again. In some cases, this repeats endlessly. Others get briefly signed in before being pushed back to login without any error message.
The behavior feels like an account issue, but it usually isn’t. The account itself works fine through a browser or another device. The loop is typically caused by a mismatch between stored authentication tokens and the secure biometric storage on the phone.
When biometric login is enabled, PayPal creates a secure session key tied to the device’s encrypted credential store. If that key becomes invalid — often after an app update, system update, biometric change, or security reset — the app keeps trying to reuse a broken session instead of creating a new one.
Confirm the Symptom
You are likely facing this specific issue if:
- Login succeeds briefly but returns to the sign-in screen
- The loop started after enabling fingerprint or Face ID
- Browser login works normally
- Reinstalling alone did not permanently fix it
Fix by Resetting Biometric Authentication Inside the App
This resolves most cases because it forces PayPal to generate a fresh secure login token.
- Open the PayPal app.
- Attempt login normally.
- If you reach the home screen even briefly, go to Settings.
- Open Login and Security.
- Disable biometric login (Fingerprint or Face ID).
- Log out manually.
- Close the app completely from recent apps.
- Reopen the app and sign in using password only.
- After successful login, enable biometric login again.
If the loop prevents access to settings, continue with the next method.
Clear Stored App Credentials
Removing cached security data forces PayPal to abandon the corrupted session.
On Android:
- Go to Settings → Apps → PayPal.
- Select Storage.
- Tap Clear Cache, then Clear Data.
- Restart the phone before opening PayPal again.
On iPhone:
- Delete the PayPal app.
- Restart the device.
- Reinstall the app from the App Store.
Restarting matters because biometric credentials remain active in memory until the system reloads security services.
Check for Biometric Changes on the Device
The loop often appears after adding or removing fingerprints or resetting Face ID. If this happened recently, refresh the device authentication layer:
- Open device biometric settings.
- Remove all saved fingerprints or facial profiles.
- Restart the phone.
- Add biometrics again.
- Log into PayPal using password first.
- Re-enable biometric login afterward.
Optional Alternative: Login Once Without Biometrics
If the issue continues, sign in through a mobile browser instead of the app. After confirming the account works, return to the app and log in without enabling biometrics for a day or two. This allows PayPal to refresh backend device trust records associated with your account.
Once the app creates a stable session again, biometric login can usually be turned back on without the loop returning.
