Phone not connecting to car Bluetooth after latest iOS update

After installing a recent iOS update, many users notice their phone suddenly refuses to connect to their car’s Bluetooth system. The car may still appear in the Bluetooth list, but tapping it does nothing, pairing fails repeatedly, or the connection drops seconds after it succeeds. In some cases, the car connects for calls but not for audio streaming.

This usually isn’t a hardware failure. iOS updates often reset or rewrite wireless profiles behind the scenes. Older Bluetooth pairings stored both on the phone and inside the car can become incompatible, even though they still appear saved.

Why this happens

When iOS updates modify Bluetooth security or device identification data, the phone may generate a new internal pairing signature. The car’s infotainment system still expects the old one, so authentication silently fails. Some vehicles — especially those with older firmware — struggle to renegotiate the connection automatically.

In short, both devices believe they are already paired, but they no longer trust each other.

Step-by-step fixes

Remove the old Bluetooth connection completely

On the iPhone, go to Settings → Bluetooth, tap the information icon next to the car name, then choose Forget This Device.

Now go into the car’s Bluetooth menu and delete the phone from the vehicle’s saved devices list as well. This part matters — removing it from only one side often keeps the conflict active.

Restart both systems

Turn the iPhone off and back on. Then fully power down the car’s infotainment system. If possible, turn the vehicle off, open the driver door, and wait about a minute so the system shuts down completely before restarting.

Pair again from scratch

Start the pairing process from the car’s screen first, not from the phone. When the pairing request appears on the iPhone, confirm the matching code and allow contacts and favorites to sync when prompted.

Many connection problems stop here once both devices create a fresh pairing profile.

Reset network settings if pairing still fails

If the phone still refuses to connect, go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings. This clears stored Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and network configurations that may conflict after the update.

You will need to reconnect Wi-Fi networks afterward.

Optional alternative solution

If the connection works briefly but drops during calls or music playback, check whether your car manufacturer provides a firmware update for the infotainment system. Some vehicles require updates to remain compatible with newer iOS Bluetooth protocols.

Once the pairing is recreated or network settings are reset, the phone typically reconnects automatically each time the car starts.
