Telegram images blurry only when auto download setting enabled

Some Telegram users notice a strange pattern: photos look perfectly clear when opened manually, but appear blurry or low quality when they load automatically in chats. This usually happens after enabling auto download for mobile data or Wi-Fi, and it can make images look compressed even though the sender uploaded a high-resolution photo.

The behavior is not a display bug. In most cases, Telegram is intentionally downloading a lighter version of the image to reduce data usage and speed up loading. When auto download is active, the app may prioritize compressed previews instead of the original file, especially under certain data-saving or storage conditions.

Why It Happens

Telegram separates image previews from full-quality media. Auto download often pulls the optimized preview first. If data saver, storage optimization, or restricted background usage is active, the app may never replace that preview with the full-resolution version unless you manually open or re-download the image.

Network instability can also trigger aggressive compression. Telegram assumes a slower connection and delivers smaller files to keep chats responsive.

Fix Auto Download Quality Settings

  1. Open Telegram.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Select Data and Storage.
  4. Under Automatic Media Download, tap the active connection type (Mobile Data or Wi-Fi).
  5. Make sure Photos are enabled.
  6. If available, disable any data-saving or reduced usage options.

After adjusting this, close and reopen the chat, then tap the image again to force Telegram to fetch the full version.

Disable Data Saver Mode

Telegram’s data saver limits media quality during automatic downloads.

  1. Open SettingsData and Storage.
  2. Find Data Saver.
  3. Turn it off completely.

Once disabled, new images should download in higher quality automatically.

Clear Cached Media

If blurry images were already cached, Telegram may keep showing the compressed version.

  1. Go to SettingsData and Storage.
  2. Tap Storage Usage.
  3. Select Clear Cache.

Reopen the conversation and let images download again.

Check System-Level Data Restrictions

Some phones apply background data limits that override Telegram’s settings. If enabled, Telegram downloads smaller media automatically.

  1. Open your phone’s system App Settings.
  2. Select Telegram.
  3. Ensure background data and unrestricted data usage are allowed.

Optional Alternative

If you prefer maximum quality every time, disable auto download for photos entirely. Images will then load only when tapped, forcing Telegram to retrieve the original file instead of a preview.

Once the correct download behavior is restored, newly received images should appear sharp without needing manual reloading.
