TikTok app drains battery unusually fast during background activity

Some users notice their phone battery dropping much faster than expected even when they are no longer actively using TikTok. The app may appear closed, yet battery usage statistics show TikTok continuing to consume power in the background. In many cases, the device also feels slightly warm hours after the last session.

This usually happens because TikTok keeps background processes running longer than people realize. The app constantly refreshes recommendations, preloads videos, checks notifications, and syncs analytics data. If background permissions are unrestricted, these activities continue even when the screen is off.

Check Background App Activity Permissions

The first thing to verify is whether TikTok is allowed to run freely in the background.

  1. Open Settings on your phone.
  2. Go to Apps or Applications.
  3. Select TikTok.
  4. Tap Battery.
  5. Change the setting to Restricted, Optimized, or disable background activity depending on your device.

This prevents continuous syncing when the app is not actively open.

Disable Background Data Usage

Background data allows TikTok to refresh feeds and upload usage data silently. Limiting this often reduces battery drain immediately.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Network & Internet or Connections.
  3. Select Data Usage.
  4. Find TikTok.
  5. Turn off Background Data.

You will still receive updates when opening the app manually, but it stops constant background communication.

Turn Off Unnecessary Notifications

Frequent push notifications wake the device repeatedly, which prevents deep sleep mode.

  1. Open TikTok.
  2. Go to Profile → Menu → Settings and Privacy.
  3. Open Notifications.
  4. Disable recommendations, live alerts, and promotional notifications you do not need.

Reducing notification triggers lowers background wake cycles.

Clear Cache Inside TikTok

A large cache can cause repeated background indexing and syncing.

  1. Open TikTok.
  2. Go to Settings and Privacy.
  3. Scroll to Cache & Cellular.
  4. Tap Clear Cache.

This does not remove your account or drafts.

Check for App or System Updates

Battery drain spikes sometimes appear after a buggy app update. Installing newer versions often fixes background behavior.

  1. Open the App Store or Play Store.
  2. Search for TikTok.
  3. Install any available updates.
  4. Also check for system updates under device settings.

Optional Alternative: Use System Sleep or Deep Sleep Mode

If the problem continues, placing TikTok into a deep sleep or restricted apps list forces the system to stop all background execution until you open it again manually. This option is available on many Android devices under battery management settings.

Once background permissions are limited and unnecessary syncing is stopped, TikTok should no longer appear at the top of battery usage while idle, and standby battery life typically returns to normal.
