WhatsApp voice notes play without sound through Bluetooth headphones

A fairly common situation: music and videos play normally through Bluetooth headphones, calls sound fine, but WhatsApp voice notes appear to play silently. The progress bar moves, the phone shows audio is active, yet nothing comes through the headset.

This usually isn’t a hardware failure. In most cases, the phone is sending WhatsApp audio to a different audio channel than the one your Bluetooth headphones are currently using. Messaging apps sometimes switch between media audio and call audio profiles, and the connection doesn’t always follow correctly.

Recognize the Symptom

You may notice one or more of these behaviors:

  • Voice notes play silently while other apps have sound.
  • Sound suddenly comes from the phone speaker instead of headphones.
  • Volume buttons change call volume instead of media volume.
  • Disconnecting Bluetooth makes the audio work instantly.

Why This Happens

Bluetooth headphones use separate audio profiles. One handles media playback (A2DP), while another handles calls and voice communication (HFP). WhatsApp voice messages sometimes trigger the call profile, especially after a recent call, voice recording, or notification interruption. When the phone misroutes the audio, playback continues but no sound reaches the headphones.

Step-by-Step Fixes

Reconnect the Bluetooth Device

This resets the active audio profile.

  1. Turn Bluetooth off on your phone.
  2. Wait about 10 seconds.
  3. Turn Bluetooth back on and reconnect the headphones.
  4. Play a voice note again.

Check Bluetooth Audio Permissions

Some phones allow separate toggles for calls and media audio.

  1. Open Settings → Bluetooth.
  2. Tap the gear icon next to your headphones.
  3. Make sure both Media audio and Call audio are enabled.

If one is disabled, WhatsApp may send audio to a channel your headset isn’t using.

Force WhatsApp to Reset Audio Routing

  1. Close WhatsApp completely from recent apps.
  2. Go to Settings → Apps → WhatsApp.
  3. Tap Force Stop.
  4. Reopen WhatsApp and test playback.

This clears temporary audio session conflicts.

Adjust Volume While the Voice Note Is Playing

Start playing a voice message, then press the volume buttons. If the phone shows call volume instead of media volume, increase it fully. WhatsApp may be using the call channel even though it looks like normal playback.

Disable Phone Speaker Detection

WhatsApp automatically switches output when it thinks the phone is near your ear.

  1. Play a voice note.
  2. Keep the phone away from your face and sensors.
  3. Lock and unlock the screen once if needed.

A partially covered proximity sensor can silently redirect audio.

Optional Alternative Solution

If the problem keeps returning, remove the Bluetooth device completely and pair it again:

  1. Forget the headphones from Bluetooth settings.
  2. Restart the phone.
  3. Pair the headphones as a new device.

This rebuilds the audio profile configuration and often stops the issue from repeating.

Once audio routing resets correctly, WhatsApp voice notes should immediately play through the headphones like any other media.
