Why does Pinterest app freeze when switching between multiple boards

You open Pinterest, move between a few saved boards, and everything feels normal at first. Then suddenly the app stops responding. Scrolling freezes, taps don’t register, and sometimes the screen locks for several seconds before recovering — or the app closes completely. This usually happens when jumping quickly between boards or opening several boards in a row.

This behavior is typically not caused by a single bug. In most cases, it’s a combination of memory overload, cached data conflicts, and how the Pinterest app reloads large image collections while switching views. Boards often contain hundreds of high-resolution pins, and each transition forces the app to rebuild the interface while still holding previous content in memory.

Likely Cause

When switching boards rapidly, Pinterest temporarily keeps previously viewed images active so returning feels faster. On devices with limited available RAM — or when background apps are already consuming resources — the app struggles to release memory quickly enough. The result is a temporary freeze.

Corrupted cache files can make this worse. Instead of loading clean data, the app repeatedly tries to reuse damaged temporary files, which slows rendering and causes interface lockups.

Step-by-Step Fixes

Restart the Pinterest App Completely

Simply minimizing the app isn’t enough. Close it from the recent apps screen so it fully stops running, then reopen it. This clears temporary memory usage and often restores smooth navigation immediately.

Clear App Cache

On Android:

  • Open Settings
  • Go to Apps → Pinterest
  • Select Storage
  • Tap Clear Cache

This removes temporary image files without deleting your account data.

On iPhone, cache clearing isn’t manual. You’ll need to reinstall the app instead (covered below).

Reduce Background Apps

If several social media or video apps are open, they continue using memory even when idle. Close unused apps before browsing Pinterest, especially if freezes appear after long usage sessions.

Update the Pinterest App

Pinterest frequently adjusts how boards load and cache images. Older versions sometimes contain memory handling bugs that show up specifically when navigating between multiple boards.

Check the App Store or Google Play Store and install any pending update.

Log Out and Back In

Account sync data can occasionally stall interface loading. Logging out forces the app to rebuild local session files, which can remove freezing caused by sync conflicts.

Reinstall the App

If freezing continues:

  • Uninstall Pinterest
  • Restart the phone
  • Install the latest version again

This clears hidden cached databases that normal cache cleaning does not remove.

Optional Alternative

If the issue mainly appears on older devices, try using Pinterest through a mobile browser for heavy board management. The web version handles memory differently and may remain stable when switching between large boards.

Once the app loads boards smoothly without pauses or delayed touch response, the problem is resolved.
