Why does Spotify pause randomly when running in the background

A common situation goes like this: Spotify plays normally while the app is open, but the moment you switch to another app, lock the screen, or leave the phone idle, the music suddenly stops. Sometimes playback resumes on its own. Other times it stays paused until you reopen Spotify.

This usually isn’t a Spotify server problem. In most cases, the operating system is stopping background activity to save battery, manage memory, or prioritize another app. Modern phones are aggressive about limiting background processes, and music apps are often affected.

Check battery optimization settings

Battery optimization is the most frequent cause. When enabled, the system restricts apps running in the background, which interrupts audio streaming.

Android:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to AppsSpotify.
  3. Tap Battery.
  4. Select Unrestricted or disable battery optimization.

iPhone:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Battery.
  3. Turn off Low Power Mode if it’s enabled.
  4. Return to Settings → Spotify and ensure Background App Refresh is allowed.

Disable data saver or background data limits

If mobile data restrictions are active, Spotify may lose connection briefly when running in the background, which looks like random pausing.

  1. Open SettingsAppsSpotify.
  2. Tap Data usage.
  3. Allow Background data and disable any data saver restrictions.

Inside Spotify itself, open Settings and turn off Data Saver temporarily to test.

Close conflicting apps

Some apps interfere with audio focus. Navigation apps, voice assistants, screen recorders, or notification-heavy apps can briefly take control of audio playback and force Spotify to pause.

Close recently opened apps and test playback again. If the issue disappears, reopen apps one by one to identify the conflict.

Check Bluetooth and device switching

Spotify pauses automatically when audio output changes. A reconnecting Bluetooth device, car system, or smartwatch can silently trigger pauses.

  • Turn Bluetooth off temporarily.
  • Forget unused audio devices.
  • Disable automatic car or headset connections if available.

Clear Spotify cache

Corrupted temporary files can interrupt playback sessions.

Android:

  1. Settings → Apps → Spotify → Storage.
  2. Tap Clear Cache.

iPhone:

Spotify does not provide a direct cache button. Log out of Spotify and log back in, or reinstall the app if needed.

Update or reinstall the app

Background playback bugs often appear after system updates. Make sure both the operating system and Spotify are fully updated. If pauses continue, uninstall Spotify, restart the phone, then install it again.

Optional workaround

If the problem only happens on mobile data, download playlists for offline playback. This removes network interruptions from the equation and helps confirm whether connectivity is involved.

Once battery restrictions are removed and background permissions are allowed, Spotify should continue playing normally even when the screen is locked or other apps are open.
