You open Telegram later and suddenly realize messages arrived hours ago — but no notifications ever appeared. This usually happens right after clearing the recent apps list or using a “close all apps” button. Telegram works normally when opened manually, yet alerts silently stop in the background.
This behavior is rarely a Telegram bug. In most cases, the operating system stops Telegram’s background service when the app is removed from recent apps. Once that background process is killed, Telegram can no longer maintain its push connection, so notifications stop until the app is opened again.
Why it happens
Modern Android systems — and some heavily optimized device brands — treat clearing recent apps as a signal that you no longer want the app running. When Telegram is forced to close, the system may also block background activity, restrict network access, or disable auto-restart.
Battery optimization features make this more aggressive. Phones try to save power by preventing messaging apps from reconnecting automatically.
Fix: Allow Telegram to run in the background
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps → Telegram.
- Tap Battery or Battery usage.
- Select Unrestricted or Allow background activity.
This prevents the system from shutting Telegram down after you clear recent apps.
Fix: Disable battery optimization for Telegram
- Open Settings → Battery.
- Find Battery Optimization or Background limits.
- Locate Telegram in the list.
- Set it to Not optimized.
After this change, Telegram can reconnect to notification servers automatically.
Fix: Lock Telegram in recent apps (if your phone supports it)
Some Android skins include aggressive memory cleaning. Locking the app prevents automatic termination.
- Open the recent apps screen.
- Long-press the Telegram app card.
- Select Lock, Keep open, or a padlock icon if available.
Fix: Check Telegram notification connection
- Open Telegram.
- Go to Settings → Notifications and Sounds.
- Make sure notifications are enabled for messages and groups.
- Restart the phone once after changing settings.
Optional alternative
If you regularly use a system cleaner or third-party “RAM booster,” exclude Telegram from automatic cleaning. These utilities often terminate messaging services even when system settings are correct.
Once Telegram is allowed to stay active in the background, alerts resume normally even after clearing the recent apps list.
