YouTube picture-in-picture mode stops working after system software update

After installing a system software update, some users notice that YouTube no longer enters picture-in-picture (PiP) mode when leaving the app. The video either pauses, minimizes completely, or continues playing only inside the app instead of floating on the screen. Before the update, PiP worked normally, which makes the change feel sudden and confusing.

This usually isn’t a YouTube app failure. System updates often reset background permissions, change media behavior rules, or disable specific app privileges silently. PiP relies on several system-level permissions working together, so when one setting changes, the feature stops responding.

Check picture-in-picture permission

Software updates commonly reset app permissions.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Apps or Applications.
  3. Select YouTube.
  4. Tap Picture-in-picture.
  5. Make sure Allow picture-in-picture is enabled.

If this option was turned off during the update, PiP will not activate even though the feature still exists.

Verify background playback and battery restrictions

Many system updates introduce stricter battery management. When background activity is limited, floating playback stops immediately after leaving the app.

  1. Open Settings → Apps → YouTube.
  2. Tap Battery.
  3. Select Unrestricted or Allow background activity.

Also check any device-specific optimization menus such as “Adaptive Battery,” “App power saving,” or “Background limits.” Disable restrictions for YouTube if present.

Confirm YouTube in-app settings

Occasionally, the update logs the app out or resets internal preferences.

  1. Open the YouTube app.
  2. Tap your profile picture.
  3. Go to Settings → General.
  4. Enable Picture-in-picture if available.

Close the app completely afterward and reopen it before testing again.

Clear app cache after system updates

Old cached data can conflict with new system frameworks.

  1. Open Settings → Apps → YouTube.
  2. Select Storage.
  3. Tap Clear cache.

Avoid clearing data unless necessary, since that removes downloads and preferences.

Check gesture navigation conflicts

Some updates modify gesture navigation behavior. PiP triggers when the system detects a proper Home action.

Try switching temporarily between gesture navigation and button navigation:

  1. Open Settings → System → Navigation.
  2. Change navigation mode.
  3. Test PiP again by pressing Home while a video is playing.

Update or reinstall YouTube

If the installed version isn’t fully compatible with the new system build, PiP may fail silently.

  1. Open the Play Store.
  2. Search for YouTube.
  3. Install any available update.

If the problem started immediately after updating YouTube itself, uninstall updates and reinstall them to refresh the app framework.

Optional alternative: restart system media services

A full device restart after a major system update often restores media permissions that didn’t reload correctly during installation. Power the device off completely, wait about 30 seconds, then turn it back on before testing again.

Once permissions, background activity, and app settings are aligned again, picture-in-picture mode typically resumes normal behavior without further changes.
