Zoom camera not detected after connecting external USB camera adapter

A common situation goes like this: the external USB camera works normally in other apps, but when opening Zoom, the camera option either disappears or shows “No camera detected.” Sometimes Zoom keeps using the laptop’s built-in camera even though the external adapter is already connected.

This usually happens right after plugging in a USB camera adapter, docking station, or capture device. The problem is rarely the camera itself. In most cases, Zoom is either not recognizing the newly registered video device, or the operating system hasn’t granted proper access to it yet.

Recognize the symptom

You may notice one or more of these behaviors:

  • The camera works in the system Camera app but not in Zoom.
  • The external camera does not appear in Zoom’s camera list.
  • Zoom shows a black screen after switching cameras.
  • The camera worked before reconnecting the USB adapter.

Why this happens

When a USB camera adapter is connected, the system creates a new video input device. Zoom only detects cameras available at launch. If the adapter initializes slowly, uses generic drivers, or conflicts with another video source, Zoom may fail to register it.

Permission settings, USB power management, or driver mismatches can also prevent Zoom from accessing the device even though the system sees it.

Step-by-step fixes

Reconnect the adapter before opening Zoom

Close Zoom completely, including the background process.

  • Unplug the USB camera adapter.
  • Wait about 10 seconds.
  • Plug it back directly into the computer (avoid hubs if possible).
  • Wait until the system finishes detecting the device.
  • Open Zoom afterward.

This forces Zoom to detect the camera during startup.

Manually select the camera inside Zoom

  • Open Zoom Settings.
  • Go to Video.
  • Expand the camera dropdown list.
  • Select the external USB camera manually.

If multiple similar names appear, try each one briefly.

Check operating system camera permissions

Even working hardware will fail if access is blocked.

Windows:

  • Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera.
  • Make sure camera access is enabled.
  • Allow desktop apps to access the camera.

macOS:

  • System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera.
  • Ensure Zoom is allowed.

Disable conflicting camera devices

Some systems prioritize built-in webcams.

  • Open Device Manager (Windows) or System Information (Mac).
  • Temporarily disable the internal webcam.
  • Restart Zoom and test again.

Update or reinstall the USB camera driver

Adapters often rely on generic USB video drivers that fail after updates.

  • Disconnect the adapter.
  • Remove the camera device from Device Manager.
  • Restart the computer.
  • Reconnect the adapter and allow drivers to reinstall automatically.

Check USB power management

Some ports briefly suspend external devices.

  • Device Manager → USB Root Hub.
  • Open Properties → Power Management.
  • Uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device.”

Optional alternative solution

If Zoom still cannot detect the camera, try launching another video app first (such as the system Camera app), confirm the camera works there, then close it and immediately open Zoom. This sometimes forces proper device initialization, especially with capture adapters.

Once Zoom successfully lists the external camera, the setting usually remains stable for future sessions.
