Android phone delays incoming notifications until screen is unlocked

Some Android users notice that notifications do not appear when the phone is idle. Messages, emails, or app alerts only arrive after the screen is turned on or the device is unlocked. Once the phone wakes up, several notifications may appear all at once.

This behavior usually makes it seem as if the phone was offline, even though the network connection is working normally.

Why Notifications Are Delayed

In most cases, the issue is related to battery optimization or background activity restrictions. Modern Android versions limit background processes when the screen is off to conserve battery power.

When an app is restricted too aggressively, it cannot maintain its background connection with notification servers. Instead of receiving alerts immediately, the system waits until the device wakes up and resumes background activity.

Check Battery Optimization Settings

Battery optimization is the most common reason notifications are delayed.

Open Settings, then navigate to Battery or Battery Usage. Look for the section called Battery Optimization or Background Restrictions.

Find the apps that should deliver notifications instantly, such as messaging or email apps. Change their setting from Optimized to Unrestricted or Don't optimize.

This allows the app to maintain its background connection even when the screen is off.

Allow Background Data

If background data is disabled, the app cannot communicate with its servers while the phone is idle.

Open the app's information page through Settings → Apps → Select the app. Tap Mobile Data & Wi-Fi or Data Usage and make sure Background Data is enabled.

This ensures the app can receive incoming messages in real time.

Disable Adaptive Battery Restrictions

Some devices include additional power-saving features such as Adaptive Battery or App Sleep modes.

These systems automatically limit apps that are used infrequently. If a messaging or notification-heavy app is placed in a restricted category, alerts may be delayed.

Check the battery settings for sections like Sleeping Apps or Restricted Apps and remove any important apps from those lists.

Check Notification Permissions

If notifications are partially restricted, the system may postpone background alerts until the device becomes active.

Open the app's notification settings and confirm that notifications are allowed and not silenced or scheduled.

Restart the Device

Occasionally the background messaging service becomes stuck. Restarting the device forces Android to reconnect to notification services and rebuild active background connections.

This step often restores normal notification delivery.

Optional: Reset App Preferences

If multiple apps are affected, resetting app preferences can restore default background behavior.

Go to Settings → Apps → Reset App Preferences. This will not delete personal data but may re-enable disabled services required for notifications.

Issues related to background behavior sometimes appear alongside system gesture or navigation problems after system updates. A similar troubleshooting example can be found in this guide explaining how devices recover when navigation gestures suddenly stop responding.

Once background activity restrictions are adjusted correctly, notifications should arrive immediately, even while the screen remains off.
