Instagram Reels Sound Missing on Some Videos Only

Sometimes Instagram Reels play normally, but a few videos suddenly have no sound at all. The audio icon may appear active, the phone volume is up, yet those specific clips remain silent. Other Reels still play audio without any issue, which makes the problem confusing.

This behavior usually points to a content-specific or playback condition rather than a hardware problem. In most cases, the audio track for certain Reels is restricted, muted by Instagram’s playback system, or temporarily failing to load on the device.

Why Only Some Reels Have No Sound

Instagram handles audio in Reels differently from standard videos. Each Reel can contain multiple audio layers such as original sound, licensed music, or remixed audio. If the platform fails to load the track or if the sound is restricted in your region, the video may still play but without audio.

Other common causes include:

  • The Reel uses music not available in your region
  • The audio track was removed or muted by Instagram
  • Temporary app playback glitches
  • Audio conflicts when switching between videos
  • Device audio routing issues

Check If the Video Uses Restricted Music

Some Reels rely on licensed music that may not be available in every country. When that happens, Instagram sometimes removes the audio but still allows the video to play.

Open the Reel and tap the audio title under the username. If the track page shows limited availability or fails to load, the sound may simply be restricted in your region.

In this situation there is nothing wrong with your device.

Reload the Reel Playback

Audio tracks occasionally fail to load when scrolling quickly between Reels.

Try forcing the video to reload:

  1. Exit the Reel.
  2. Scroll to another video.
  3. Return to the silent Reel.
  4. Tap the video once to pause, then play again.

This refresh often triggers Instagram to reload the missing audio layer.

Close and Reopen the Instagram App

Temporary audio glitches inside the app can affect only certain videos.

Fully closing Instagram clears the playback session.

On iPhone

  1. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen.
  2. Find Instagram in the app switcher.
  3. Swipe it away to close.
  4. Open Instagram again.

On Android

  1. Open the recent apps screen.
  2. Swipe Instagram away.
  3. Launch the app again.

After reopening, return to the Reel and check whether the sound appears.

Verify Instagram Isn’t Routing Audio to Another Device

If Bluetooth headphones or speakers were recently connected, Instagram may still attempt to send audio there even after the device disconnects.

Open your phone’s Bluetooth panel and confirm that no audio device remains connected.

If this happens frequently with Reels audio behavior, a related situation is explained here: https://fix.masbear.com/2026/03/instagram-reels-no-sound-bluetooth-headphones.html.

Update the Instagram App

Occasionally, missing audio in Reels appears after an app update glitch.

Check the app store for updates:

  1. Open the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Search for Instagram.
  3. Install any available update.

Updated versions often fix playback bugs affecting Reels audio.

Try Viewing the Reel From the Creator Profile

Sometimes the audio loads correctly when the Reel is opened directly instead of through the scrolling feed.

  1. Tap the creator’s username.
  2. Open their profile.
  3. Find the Reel in the grid.
  4. Play it from there.

If the sound works this way, the issue was likely a temporary feed playback glitch.

When none of these steps restore sound but other Reels continue working normally, the audio track was most likely removed or restricted by Instagram itself.
