You finish a long phone call, pull the phone away from your ear, and try to open another app — but nothing responds for a few seconds. The screen may ignore taps, animations feel frozen, or the device reacts late before suddenly returning to normal. It usually lasts only a moment, but it happens often enough to feel wrong.
This behavior is surprisingly common, especially after extended calls. In most cases, the phone is not actually crashing. It is briefly busy reorganizing system resources after the call ends.
Why it happens
During a long call, several background processes stay active at the same time: cellular radio management, audio processing, proximity sensor control, call recording services (on some devices), and battery optimization tasks. When the call ends, Android has to release those resources and switch the device back to normal performance mode.
If memory usage is already high or system services are delayed, the interface may pause while the system finishes cleanup tasks. The phone appears frozen even though it is technically still working.
Older devices, heavy multitasking, or aggressive battery-saving settings make this more noticeable.
Step-by-step fixes
Restart the phone first
A simple restart clears temporary system processes that may be stacking up after repeated calls. If the issue appeared recently, this alone often fixes it.
Check available storage
Low storage slows system transitions. Keep at least 10–15% of internal storage free. Delete large videos, downloads, or unused apps if space is nearly full.
Close background-heavy apps
Apps like social media, navigation, or video platforms consume memory continuously. After long calls, Android may struggle to restore them smoothly. Clear recent apps and observe whether responsiveness improves.
Disable unnecessary call features
Look inside Phone app settings for features such as call recording, Wi-Fi calling, or AI noise reduction. These add extra processing during calls. Turning off features you don’t use reduces post-call lag.
Update system software
Phone manufacturers regularly fix telephony and memory-handling bugs. Install pending system updates and update the Phone app from the app store.
Reset network settings
If the freeze mainly happens after cellular calls (not messaging apps), resetting network settings can help refresh carrier configuration.
Go to Settings → System → Reset options → Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth.
Optional alternative solution
If the delay only happens after very long calls, switching the preferred network temporarily to LTE instead of automatic 5G can reduce radio handoff processing on some devices. This lowers the workload when ending calls.
Once the system no longer pauses after calls, no further action is needed.
