You type a message in WhatsApp, tap send, and instead of the usual single check mark, a small clock icon appears beside the message. It stays there. Minutes pass, sometimes longer, and the message never leaves the device.
This usually means the message hasn’t reached WhatsApp’s servers yet. The phone is holding the message locally, waiting for a working network connection or permission to transmit data.
The problem typically appears when background data is restricted, the network connection is unstable, or WhatsApp temporarily loses permission to access mobile data or WiFi.
Check whether the internet connection is actually working
The most common cause is a connection that appears active but cannot transfer data.
Open a browser and try loading a website. If pages load slowly or fail to open, the phone may be connected to a weak WiFi network or a mobile signal that cannot maintain a stable data session.
Switch between WiFi and mobile data for a moment. Then return to WhatsApp and see if the pending messages send automatically.
Disable data saver or background restrictions
Some Android systems restrict apps from sending data while running in the background. When this happens, WhatsApp may queue messages until the restriction is lifted.
Open:
Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Mobile Data & WiFi
Make sure the following are enabled:
- Background data
- Unrestricted data usage
- Allow data while Data Saver is on
After changing these settings, reopen WhatsApp and the clock icon messages usually send immediately.
Turn airplane mode on briefly
Sometimes the device holds onto a broken network session even though signal bars are visible.
Enable Airplane Mode for about 15 seconds, then disable it again. This forces the phone to reconnect to the cellular network and obtain a fresh data connection.
Once the network reconnects, open WhatsApp and check whether the queued messages send.
Force close WhatsApp
If the app’s network process freezes, messages may remain stuck even though the connection works.
Close the app completely from the recent apps screen. On Android you can also go to:
Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Force Stop
Open the app again and allow it a few seconds to reconnect.
Check if the issue happens on certain networks
Occasionally the clock icon appears only when connected to a particular WiFi network. Router DNS problems or firewall filtering can interrupt WhatsApp connections.
If you notice the problem only while using WiFi, switching to mobile data can confirm it. A related case is explained here:
messages failing to send while connected to WiFi.
Restart the phone
If messages remain queued even though the connection works, restart the device. This resets the network stack, clears temporary app processes, and re-establishes WhatsApp’s connection to its servers.
After the phone powers back on and reconnects to the network, open WhatsApp. Messages showing the clock icon normally send within a few seconds.
