Why does my phone disconnect from carrier during video calls

You start a video call and everything works normally for a minute or two. Then the signal bars suddenly drop, the call freezes, or the phone switches to “No Service” before reconnecting again. Sometimes the video call ends completely, while regular browsing or texting works fine afterward. This pattern usually repeats only during video calls, which makes it confusing.

In most cases, the phone itself is not broken. Video calls place a much heavier and more continuous load on the mobile network than normal usage. That sustained data demand exposes weak signal transitions, carrier handoffs, or software behaviors that you normally never notice.

Why It Happens

Video calls constantly upload and download data at the same time. When signal strength fluctuates even slightly, the modem inside the phone may struggle to maintain a stable connection. Instead of slowing down smoothly, some devices temporarily lose carrier registration and reconnect.

Common triggers include:

  • Switching between LTE and 5G repeatedly during movement
  • Weak indoor signal despite showing several bars
  • Carrier tower congestion during high traffic hours
  • SIM card contact instability or aging SIM hardware
  • Battery optimization interfering with network processes
  • Carrier configuration bugs after system updates

Step-by-Step Fixes

Lock the Network Mode Temporarily

Automatic network switching is one of the biggest causes. When signal quality changes, the phone jumps between network types and briefly disconnects.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Mobile Network or SIM Settings.
  3. Select Preferred Network Type.
  4. Choose LTE only (or 4G only).

Test another video call. If stability improves, the issue is likely aggressive 5G handoff.

Reset Network Settings

Carrier profiles sometimes become unstable after updates or SIM swaps.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Search for Reset Network Settings.
  3. Confirm the reset.

This clears saved carrier configurations and forces the modem to rebuild connections cleanly.

Disable Data Saver or Background Restrictions

Some phones mistakenly treat video call traffic as background activity.

  1. Go to Settings → Battery.
  2. Open App Battery Usage.
  3. Find your video call app.
  4. Set it to Unrestricted or Not Optimized.

Check Signal Stability, Not Just Signal Bars

Signal bars don’t show signal quality. Try moving near a window or outdoors and start another call. If disconnects stop, the issue is environmental interference rather than the device.

Reseat or Replace the SIM Card

An older SIM can lose stable electrical contact during heavy data transmission.

  1. Power off the phone.
  2. Remove and clean the SIM gently.
  3. Reinsert it firmly.

If the SIM is several years old, requesting a replacement from the carrier often resolves random carrier drops.

Update Carrier Services and System Software

Modem firmware updates frequently fix network instability.

  1. Check for system updates.
  2. Update carrier services or SIM toolkit apps if available.

Optional Alternative

If disconnects only happen at home or in one specific area, enable Wi-Fi calling and run video calls over Wi-Fi instead. This bypasses unstable tower handoffs entirely while keeping your phone number active.

Once the connection stops dropping during sustained calls, the issue is resolved.
