Snapchat camera shows black screen only when using front camera

If Snapchat opens normally but the front camera stays completely black, you’re usually not dealing with a hardware failure. In most cases, the app either loses permission to access the selfie camera or gets stuck using the wrong camera session in the background. The fix is often quick once you reset the right thing.

Start with the simple checks below. Don’t skip ahead — the early steps solve this more often than people expect.

Close Snapchat Completely and Reopen It

Snapchat sometimes fails to switch from the rear camera to the front camera after multitasking or switching apps quickly.

  1. Open the recent apps screen.
  2. Swipe Snapchat away so it fully closes.
  3. Wait about five seconds.
  4. Open Snapchat again and switch to the front camera.

If the screen works now, the issue was just a stuck camera session.

Check Camera Permissions (Front Camera Access)

It sounds obvious, but permission glitches are surprisingly common after system updates.

On iPhone:

  1. Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera.
  2. Make sure Snapchat is enabled.
  3. Then open Settings → Snapchat and confirm Camera access is allowed.

On Android:

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Snapchat.
  2. Tap Permissions.
  3. Set Camera permission to Allow while using the app.

After changing permissions, fully close Snapchat and reopen it.

Switch Cameras Using the System Camera First

This sounds odd, but it often resets which camera Android or iOS assigns to apps.

  1. Open your phone’s default Camera app.
  2. Switch to the front camera.
  3. Take one photo.
  4. Close the camera app.
  5. Open Snapchat again.

If Snapchat suddenly works, the system camera service had locked onto the wrong sensor earlier.

Clear Snapchat Cache or App Data

Corrupted temporary files can prevent the front camera module from loading correctly.

Android:

  1. Settings → Apps → Snapchat → Storage.
  2. Tap Clear Cache.

iPhone:
There’s no manual cache button, so the equivalent step is reinstalling the app:

  1. Delete Snapchat.
  2. Restart the phone.
  3. Install Snapchat again from the App Store.

Your account and snaps remain safe because they’re stored online.

Check for Other Apps Using the Camera

Video calling apps, screen recorders, or floating camera utilities can quietly hold the front camera in use. Close apps like Zoom, Instagram, TikTok, or any background recorder before opening Snapchat again.

Update the App and System Software

Front-camera issues often appear after OS updates until Snapchat releases a compatibility patch. Update both:

  • Snapchat from the App Store or Play Store
  • Your phone’s system software

One Useful Tip

If the front camera works everywhere except Snapchat, avoid resetting your whole phone. That almost never fixes this specific issue — reinstalling the app is far more effective.

Once permissions refresh or the cache clears, the front camera should immediately return to normal operation inside Snapchat.
